Dundruff
Dundruff is one common scalp problem affecting teens. This is described as irritatingly itchy scalp with associated dryness and desquamation (flaking). Common culprits are shampoo that are too strong or not suited to the users scalp, hairs setting gels or hairspray, or hairy treatment procedures. These agents may cause burning sensation, dryness and irritation and may even cause damage to the hair. The good thing about this, discontinuation of the use of the irritating substance will relieve the signs and symptoms.
There are cases were in the cause of sebbhorhea is a fungal scalp infection. This is called Tinea Capitis most commonly caused by Trichophyton tonsurans. The affected area of the scalp may be reddish with scaling and fragmented hair shafts. If the involvement is extensive the lesions will cause scar formation and cause cosmetic deformity.
Tinea Capitis infection is confirmed by fungal culture and a positive KOH preparation. Management of this infection includes shampoos containing selenium sulfide (Selsun Blue, etc), and oral anti-fungal .
